St. Louis, November 8, 2005 - Jan Paul Miller, United States Attorney for the Central District of Illinois, will join Thompson Coburn LLP on December 1, 2005, as a partner in its Business Litigation and Corporate Compliance, Investigation and Defense practice groups. Miller will be based in the firm's St. Louis office and will work in the firm's Belleville, Illinois and Washington, D.C. offices as well.

"We are extremely pleased to have Jan Miller join our firm," Thompson Coburn LLP Chair Thomas J. Minogue said. "The firm's Business Litigation and Corporate Compliance and Defense practices are growing substantially. As someone who has investigated, prosecuted and tried high-profile, high-stakes cases, Jan will add to the depth and strength of these practice areas in representing our clients throughout the country."

Miller is coming to Thompson Coburn LLP after a distinguished career as a prosecutor with the Department of Justice, Minogue said. As an Assistant United States Attorney for the District of Maryland, Miller prosecuted a number of major criminal cases and represented the United States in civil actions, including personal injury suits and civil forfeitures. Miller's experience includes investigating and prosecuting cases involving government contract fraud, bank fraud, wire fraud, tax evasion, FDA fraud, money laundering, mortgage fraud, and bankruptcy fraud.

In addition to being a trial attorney, Miller held various supervisory positions in Maryland, including Section Chief, Branch Chief and Senior Litigation Counsel. As Appellate Chief of the office's Southern Division, he was responsible for reviewing all submissions to the Federal Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit. Miller's work as a prosecutor has been commended by numerous investigative agencies and he has received awards from the Department of Justice and the International Association of Financial Crimes Investigators.

Miller was chosen by President George W. Bush to be the United States Attorney for the Central District of Illinois after a nationwide search, Minogue said. Miller was recommended for the position by then Senator Peter Fitzgerald, who wanted to find an experienced, non-partisan, federal prosecutor to be United States Attorney. After being recommended by Senator Fitzgerald, Miller was interviewed by officials from the Department of Justice and the White House before being nominated by the President. He was then confirmed by the United States Senate.

As the chief federal law enforcement official for the Central District of Illinois from January 2002 until the present, Miller supervised an office of 70 employees, including 29 Assistant United States Attorneys, and coordinated the law enforcement efforts of local, state and federal agencies in the District's 46 counties. Miller emphasized the prosecution of white collar crime. He oversaw the first conviction in the nation for kickbacks relating to government contracts issued to support the war effort in Iraq.

Under his direction, his office successfully prosecuted cases in the areas of health care fraud, mortgage fraud, investment fraud, government contract fraud and fraud targeting the elderly. Miller oversaw the expansion of the Central Illinois Cybercrime Unit, which investigates on-line fraud and child exploitation. In the civil arena, Miller's office obtained millions of dollars in reimbursement and penalties from hospitals that overbilled the Medicare and Medicaid programs, and worked with state and local agencies to make public buildings accessible to the physically impaired as required by law.

Miller earned his JD cum laude from Harvard Law School in 1985 and a BA in Political Science from the University of North Carolina in 1982. He has served as an Adjunct Professor for the University of Illinois College of Law and George Washington University.

Thompson Coburn is a full service law firm with offices in St. Louis, Belleville and Washington, D.C. With nearly 300 attorneys, Thompson Coburn is among the largest 200 law firms in the United States.
